MAKING F&B KNOWHOW ACCESSIBLE TO THE SAUDI MARKET
Qoot is the first restaurant and cafes association in Saudi Arabia. As part of being involved in building their vision and reshaping their offerings, we designed an ecosystem that enabled them to achieve their goals through multiple collaborative platforms. One of these platforms was Bustan, a one-of-a-kind technology solution supporting local restaurant and cafe players by offering them the opportunity to seek operational guidance and access an abundance of tools built around their needs.
The Challenge
Restaurants and cafes in the Kingdom were having a difficult time when it came to accessing operational knowhow and local knowledge. This was especially true for the many new F&B entities which were establishing themselves at the time, most of which were SMEs. Additionally, many establishments were facing challenges when it came to hiring Saudis in order to meet quotas specified by the Saudi government.
The Process
To better understand these challenges and determine the best way forward, we spoke to restaurants and cafes that were operating locally. This included well-known entities like McDonald’s and Shawarmer, allowing us to gain insights into the challenges they were facing locally, particularly when it came to recruitment.  We also interviewed SME’s to learn about their challenges, and asses how these challenges differed for entities of different sizes. We were therefore able to determine the services that our solution needed to provide so that it could meet the requirements of each type of business. These services included providing restaurants and cafes with operational guidance through a knowledge hub, industry news & updates through a news stream, and recruitment-related services; making the platform the go-to option for HR managers and employers. These were the most essential services the restaurants and cafes required, and so we decided to to focus on them for the first phase of Bustan, thereafter aiming to add additional features such as training services. We also decided to name the platform Bustan as an ‘orchard’ that would not only help the F&B entities to grow, but would also continue to grow itself.
The Experience
We designed the Bustan platform as a one-stop shop that fulfilled all the restaurants’ and cafes’ needs. As a knowledge hub, it provided restaurants and cafes with the operational knowledge they needed at every stage, from Ideation to Growth & Expansion, providing the information that was relevant to them according to their phase of development and their establishment size. As a source of news, Bustan shared the latest industry updates, allowing restaurants and cafes to keep abreast of the most recent technological developments and stay on track as they benefitted from insights from around the world. Through its recruitment features, Bustan enabled F&B entities to access local talent and connect with potential employees through video calls. By providing a platform through which initial interviews could be carried out, Bustan made employers’ lives easier as they were able to address all their needs under one platform.
